Violence In Mexico Cause Cruise Lines to Flee

The recent violence in Mexico has cause a stir in the cruise industry.

MSNBC.com did a story last week "Cruise lines flee Southern California ports;
Economic woes, travelers' fears of Mexico drug violence cited". Carnival Cruise Line along with some other cruise lines have decided to pull their ships out of Southern California mainly due to the recent drug-related violence in Mexico.

The article stated that "Mexican authorities last weekend discovered the bodies of at least 30 new victims, 15 beheaded, in Acapulco." While it has been pointed out that most of the violence takes place far from cruise destinations, and have not been pointed toward tourists.

As a travel professional I have seen a slump in sales to Mexico and rightfully so. I have advised my clients to select another destination in light of this situation. The fact that cruise lines are pulling their ships from California further confirms that there is much concern, likely more than is being reported to us by the media. Read more about the Mexico travel advisory.

What do you think about the violence in Mexico? I'd love to hear your comments.
